Contain the active ingredient: Glimepiride 2 mg and Metformin HCl 500 mg which is a type of medicine called a sulphonylurea. Glimepiride is used to help control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
People with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent diabetes) have a deficiency of a hormone called insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and is the main hormone responsible for controlling sugar levels in the blood. It normally makes the cells of the body remove excess sugar from the blood. In type 2 diabetes insulin is produced inefficiently in response to surges of blood sugar, eg following a meal. The cells of the body also become resistant to the action of insulin that is produced, which means that blood sugar levels can become too high.
Glimepiride works mainly by stimulating the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. These cells are called beta cells. Glimepiride causes the beta cells to produce more insulin and this insulin removes sugar from the blood.
Glimepiride also increases the uptake of sugar from the blood into muscle and fat cells and decreases the production of sugar by the liver.
All these actions help to decrease the amount of sugar in the blood of people with type 2 diabetes.
Metformin hydrochloride is a type of antidiabetic medicine called a biguanide. It works in a number of ways to lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
Firstly, it increases the sensitivity of muscle cells to insulin. This enables these cells to remove sugar from the blood more effectively. Secondly, it reduces the amount of sugar produced by cells in the liver. Finally, it delays the absorption of sugar from the intestines into the bloodstream after eating so that there is less of a spike in blood sugar levels after meals.
Metformin is taken regularly every day to help control blood sugar levels both between and directly after meals.
What is it used for?
As an adjunct to diet and exercise in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients: In case that monotherapy with glimepiride or metformin does not result in adequate glycemic control; replacement of combination therapy of glimepiride and metformin.
